๐Ÿค” When an Engineer Generates All of Their Code With AI, What Do We Call It?

๐Ÿ‘‰ I donโ€™t โ€œmanually codeโ€ anymore. I generate all my code with AI, heavy agent mode usage not little prompts. I love it. Itโ€™s fast. Itโ€™s powerful. Itโ€™s how I build. But am I coding? Or building? Or ๐ฏ๐ข๐›๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐๐ข๐ง๐ ?

Normally I share hints and tips on ๐€๐ˆ-๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  and how to use AI effectively. But today, I donโ€™t have the answer โ€” Iโ€™m asking the question.

Its a crazy, fun time to be an engineer when we donโ€™t even know how to describe what we do anymore.

On LinkedIn and elsewhere, I see debates every day:

Different terms, different nuances โ€” but none agreed upon, still debated, often confused, and causing misunderstandings.

I personally use ๐€๐ˆ-๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  a lot โ€” meaning AI is the ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐จ๐จ๐ฅ across the entire ๐’๐ƒ๐‹๐‚: requirements, design, analysis, implementation, QA, deployments. Not just coding.

But when it comes to ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, it gets tricky.

๐ŸŽต The Vibe Coding Debate

โ€œ๐•๐ข๐›๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐๐ข๐ง๐ โ€ has picked up traction. It usually means non-technical people can ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ซ their way to an app or prototype. It works, sort of. It vibes.

Thatโ€™s a clear label for non-engineers. But for engineers, it feels loaded. In engineering circles, โ€œ๐ฏ๐ข๐›๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐๐ข๐ง๐ โ€ often suggests low standards or lack of discipline and not production quality.

Yet when I work with AI, it doesnโ€™t feel that different. I describe the system in natural language:

* ๐๐จ๐ง-๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ๐ฌ. * ๐’๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง. * ๐‚๐จ๐๐ž ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž.

The AI writes it. I review, refactor, and iterate until the code meets my standard. Thatโ€™s building. Itโ€™s structured. Itโ€™s engineered. But it *looks a lot like ๐ฏ๐ข๐›๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐๐ข๐ง๐  with an engineer at the helm.*

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป Coding With AI?

Some argue itโ€™s โ€œ๐€๐ˆ-๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐œ๐จ๐๐ข๐ง๐ .โ€ Others: โ€œIโ€™m ๐œ๐จ๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐€๐ˆ.โ€ some take offence to AI writing code not engineers even when an engineer at the helm.

But none of these land for me. ๐€๐ˆ-๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  captures the process โ€” but when I sit down to build a feature, what do I *call that act*?

Iโ€™m building. Iโ€™m not typing out lines of syntax. Iโ€™m creating software through dialogue, design, iteration. Thatโ€™s not traditional coding.

๐Ÿ’ก So What Do We Call It?

This is the gap:

* Non-technical โ€œ๐ฏ๐ข๐›๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐๐ข๐ง๐ โ€ is clear. * ๐€๐ˆ-๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  describes the full process. * But the act of an engineer ๐›๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐œ๐จ๐๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก ๐€๐ˆ still has no universally accepted term.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Thatโ€™s my question: what do we call it? Iโ€™d love to hear your thoughts.
