For decades, programming languages have been our only way to define systems. โ
We donโt write assembly anymore. Abstraction helped us think faster, build faster, and move faster. C and C++ gave us power, but not the speed of delivery. High-level languages like Java, .NET, and Python won because
High-level languages are just another abstraction. A compiler reads your code and generates โreal codeโ that you never look at or care about. So hereโs the question: if AI can generate that code for us โ ๐ฑ๐ผ ๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ถ๐น๐น ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ต๐ถ๐ด๐ต-๐น๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐น ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐น?
C++ once gave us control. Every line could be reviewed and understood. But it was slow to deliver value. New languages removed complexity: manual memory management, pointers, low-level details. That wasnโt โbusiness valueโ โ it was friction. The pedestal collapsed.
Now AI is collapsing the next pedestal.
๐ Engineers complain that โvibe codingโ produces rubbish code. And often it does. But what is a vibe-coded system except a ๐ฃ๐ข๐? It works, it does what you asked for, and from there the job is the same: productionize, integrate, harden.
โ Is that really worse than the messy, bloated codebases we already live with?
The harsh truth: ๐ต๐ถ๐ด๐ต-๐น๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐น ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐ only survived because humans needed to read and maintain them. But in a world where
AI wonโt replace engineers, but it will change what we do. Our job wonโt be writing Go, JavaScript, .NET, or Java. It will be about defining systems โ capabilities, features, constraints.
The code? Disposable. A byproduct. Regenerated endlessly.
Take unit tests. BDD shows the way forward: define behavior, let AI generate the tests. Soon, weโll do the same with features and non-functionals.
So ask yourself: if AI generates a function that meets all requirements,
