โšก Engineering as a Service: Let Product Loose and Build with AI?

For decades, the wisdom has been: product and engineering must work closely together. Product defines requirements, engineering builds them. And for the most part, that model worked well.

But tension always existed:

* ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ pushing to go faster. Slowed by process and handover. * ๐„๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  aiming for long-term quality and ๐ง๐จ๐ง-๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ๐ฌ.

In the era of ๐€๐ˆ, pressure is greater. ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ can now vibe code features instantly โ€” even if they wonโ€™t hold up in the real world without ๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  guardrails or rework.

๐Ÿš€ Maybe time for something different โ€” ๐„๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š๐ฌ ๐š ๐’๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐œ๐ž (๐„๐š๐š๐’)

Think Platform as a Service, but for engineering.

* ๐„๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  builds the platform. * ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ builds functionality.

๐„๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  no longer codes features. Instead, it supplies all the ๐›๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐›๐ฅ๐จ๐œ๐ค๐ฌ needed for real-world apps:

* Service templates, components, frameworks, integration scaffolding. * ๐๐จ๐ง-๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ๐ฌ (security, telemetry, performance, resilience, CI/CD, compliance). * Back-end for front-end layers, API connectors, pipelines. * Docs, guides, and context ๐€๐ˆ can use. * Testing tools + enforced standards on every ๐€๐ˆ-generated ๐๐‘.

๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ then uses ๐€๐ˆ to vibe code features โ€” safely inside the platform building from these parts rather than new from scratch AI code.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Why This Is Different

Today:

* ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ writes requirements. * ๐„๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ implement. * Translation lost, compromises made, both sides unhappy. * Endless back-and-forth slows delivery. * ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ sees results too late, driving costly rework. * ๐„๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ often comprimize for "MVP" then try and improve after.

Tomorrow with ๐„๐š๐š๐’:

* Requirements vanish. * ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ builds directly with ๐€๐ˆ, iterating fast until they get what they want. * ๐€๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ means building, seeing, adjusting in hours โ€” not weeks. * ๐„๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ensures capability + validates every ๐๐‘ automatically. * Quality code always, no comprimizes.

๐Ÿ”ญ A Real Experiment

Iโ€™m exploring testing this with a client who wants to vibe code a rebuild of a front-end app. If they โ€œjust ๐€๐ˆ itโ€ today, chaos. But with an ๐„๐š๐š๐’ layer, product + ๐€๐ˆ could deliver faster than any traditional model. This isn't a problem that will go away we need to solve ways to go faster with AI.

๐Ÿ’ก The Future?

* ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ = builds with ๐€๐ˆ. * ๐„๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  = supplies blocks, sets guardrails, enforces tests. * ๐€๐ˆ = builder.

Bold. Risky. But maybe the way to escape decades of ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญโ€“๐ž๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  friction.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Would you embrace ๐„๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š๐ฌ ๐š ๐’๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐œ๐ž and let ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ loose to build with ๐€๐ˆ? Can you build with AI safely with the right building blocks?
