I love a good analogy when talking about AI โ€” this one hit me in the middle of a conversation with my son.

He was learning in RS about how the printing press affected religion, my brain jumped centuries back to monks โ€” heads down, candles flickering, painstakingly copying gospel books by hand.

Think about that setup: vast monasteries, farmland, workshops, entire communities built to support scribes at desks. All of that infrastructure existed purely because

Slow, expensive, fragile. Yet it was the only way to produce the one thing the Church needed to spread its message.

Then the printing press arrived.

And almost overnight, the entire book-copying industry collapsed. Books were still made but book copying was no longer constraint and there was a better way.

For as long as software has existed:

Everything in modern engineering is based on this:

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ ๐๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  & ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ฌ โ€” donโ€™t waste precious engineering cycles.

๐Ÿ“ ๐๐š๐œ๐ค๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฌ & ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง โ€” because demand always exceeds capacity.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ ๐“๐ž๐š๐ฆ ๐ก๐ข๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ซ๐œ๐ก๐ฒ โ€” seniors multiplying output through mids and juniors.

๐Ÿ”„ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ ๐ฅ๐š๐ฒ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ โ€” to filter, refine, and sequence what reaches engineering.

๐Ÿงญ ๐€๐ซ๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ญ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž โ€” aligning teams to avoid rework and drift.

๐Ÿ•’ ๐’๐œ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฆ โ€” a ritual system built to manage scarcity and ensure predictable throughput.

None of this emerged because it was elegant. It emerged because it was necessary.

And now? AI is our printing press.

Suddenly, a small number of engineers can generate massive amounts of software โ€” not abstract ideas, but real code, real systems, real value.

The bottleneck is no longer typing or the volume of human hands available but skill and ability of engineers.

The bottleneck moves to higher ground:

๐Ÿ”นclarity of intent

๐Ÿ”นcorrectness of design

๐Ÿ”นverification of output

๐Ÿ”นorchestration of AI systems rather than armies of humans

When the constraint changes, the system must change.

Just like monasteries didnโ€™t disappear โ€” they evolved into centers of brewing, agriculture, education โ€” software engineering will evolve too. But the era of processes to manage code scarcity? That era is ending.

AI isnโ€™t replacing engineers. Itโ€™s replacing the ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ that required so many of them and accepted lower skilled workers.

Smaller teams. Bigger impact. New skills. New processes.
