AI is not a coding assistant.

We need to stop framing AI as a โco-pilotโ or โassistant.โ These words define the box we mentally put AI in and limits its effectiveness.
If you think of AI as autocomplete on steroids, youโll use it like autocomplete. Generate a function. Copy. Paste. Tweak. Repeat. Two years ago, that was fair.
When ChatGPT first appeared, I used it exactly like that. It could barely produce reliable functions. Generate snippets, copy them into my IDE, refactor, fix edge cases, tighten things up. It wasnโt much different from pulling example code and adapting it.
Back then, it was a coding assistant. But we are a long way from that now.

Real-time output streaming. Interrupting mid-generation. Redirecting. Refining requirements. Reviewing implementation plans before code is produced.
As an architect and tech leader, the value I bring to the engineering process has long since stopped being typing code. Itโs:
โข Translating business requirements into coherent systems โข Defining functional and non-functional constraints โข Anticipating scaling and failure modes โข Spotting gaps and edge cases โข Setting engineering standards and practices โข Owning quality and technical direction
Thatโs what I now apply to AI agents.
I define the work. They generate the implementation. I review. I challenge assumptions. I iterate. I enforce tests and coverage. I own the outcome.
Just like leading an engineering team.

Treat it like a team of coders under strong architectural and engineering direction and you'll see results as good as your ability to direct them. The ability of the engineer at the helm to define and describe the system to build is the constraint not AIs ability to code.

If you are still coding as an engineer in 2026 you are wasting time that could be spent on these more important aspects of your role. Soon this will be only what you do, no more coding.
The code is near instantly generated. The thinking is not.
โAre you still using, or trying to use AI to help you type code?
โOr are you leading it like an architect with sold engineering practices?
โBe honest, which model are you and your team actually operating under today and pursuing and trying to make work?
