๐Ÿš€ 5โ€“10× acceleration for an AI-first engineer isnโ€™t hype โ€” what happens when you run an honest race.

People dismiss claims like this, so I set up a simple comparison:

One senior engineer using AI-first practices vs the same senior inside a typical 4-person team (1 senior, 2 mids, 1 junior).

Same engineer. Same work. Only the delivery model changes.

Maths time, four senior engineers ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† could deliver ๐Ÿฐ units (one per senior-level engineer), assuming zero meetings, zero PRs, zero mentoring, zero dependencies โ€” conditions that simply never exist.

Once you account for the unavoidable drag โ€” where the senior spends more time managing inefficiency than doing what theyโ€™re great at (delivering) โ€” the picture becomes clear:

โŒ ceremonies, refinement, planning

โŒ PR queues and rewrite cycles

โŒ mentoring + onboarding

โŒ constant context switching

โŒ alignment and communication drag

โŒ bureaucracy and process overhead

Traditional teams, without all 4 seniors, realistically deliver 2โ€“3 units, averaging ~2.5 units. Many times I'd question 2.

Now compare an ๐€๐ˆ-๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ข๐จ๐ซ, whose only focus is delivering business value:

โž• AI replaces senior/mid/junior execution

โž• mentoring overhead disappears

โž• iteration cycles shrink from days to hours or minutes

โž• no ceremonies, PR bottlenecks, or delegation delays

โž• large tasks compress dramatically

โž• parallelisation becomes free

โž• context switching collapses

โž• deep flow becomes the default

The result?

๐Ÿ‘‰ ~2.5 units baseline โ€” instantly matching the entire traditional team

๐Ÿ‘‰ ~4โ€“5 units once latency collapses, new ways of working emerge, and process becomes much lighter

๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐Ÿฑโ€“๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ× with mature AI-first workflows, parallelisation, and agents

This also explains a sentiment most senior engineers have quietly held for years:

โ€œ๐ˆ๐ญ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ ๐›๐ž ๐Ÿ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐ข๐Ÿ ๐ˆ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ญ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฅ๐Ÿ.โ€

With AI-first engineering, that becomes mathematically true.

I know a lot of engineers have only ever worked inside this traditional model โ€” itโ€™s the only engineering theyโ€™ve known.

Before the questions, a small caveat:

Even though I did the maths, a lot of the ratios, assumptions, and unit sizes can be debated โ€” and theyโ€™ll vary with the seniorโ€™s skill level and the maturity of the AI-first workflow. My goal wasnโ€™t a perfect formula, but to highlight the real pluses and minuses in delivery speed when you compare these two models.

But please โ€” dissect my maths. Iโ€™d genuinely love feedback.

โ“ Did I model the traditional team incorrectly?

โ“ Have I underestimated or overestimated AI?

โ“ Does the maths surprise you, or does it match your lived experience?
